Can SSRIs make you bruise more easily?

You’re getting dressed when you find a purple oval above your knee. You don’t remember walking into a table, though your coffee table has a convincing record and no legal representation. Then another bruise appears on your arm, and the search begins: workout, laundry basket, mysterious nighttime furniture, or the SSRI you started last month?
Yes, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, can make bruising or bleeding more likely for some people. That doesn’t mean every bruise is medication-related, and it doesn’t mean you should skip tonight’s dose. It means a new pattern deserves a closer look at timing, other medicines, and signs that this is more than an ordinary bump.
A bruise is a tiny leak with a repair crew
A bruise forms when small blood vessels under the skin are damaged and blood leaks into nearby tissue. Platelets are part of the early repair crew. They gather at an injured vessel and help form a plug while the rest of the clotting system does its work.
Serotonin isn’t only involved in signaling in the brain. Platelets take up and store serotonin too, then release it during clot formation. SSRIs block the serotonin transporter. Over time, that can reduce the serotonin available inside platelets and make platelet aggregation less effective. The medication isn’t turning your blood into water. It’s nudging one step in a complicated repair process.
That distinction matters. Research generally finds an association between serotonin-reuptake inhibitors and bleeding, particularly gastrointestinal bleeding, but the absolute risk for one person depends heavily on age, health history, dose, and other medications. A side-effect warning tells you what can happen. It can’t identify the author of one lonely bruise.
The supporting cast often matters more than the SSRI alone
The bleeding warning becomes more important when an SSRI is combined with medicines that affect platelets, the stomach lining, or clotting. Common examples include aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen. Anticoagulants such as warfarin, apixaban, and rivaroxaban matter too, as do antiplatelet medicines such as clopidogrel.
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found that adding an SSRI to NSAID treatment was associated with more upper gastrointestinal bleeding than NSAID treatment alone. That’s not a command to throw out the ibuprofen. It’s a reason to make sure the clinician and pharmacist know the whole combination, including medicines you take only occasionally.
Bring over-the-counter products, supplements, alcohol use, and recent medication changes into the conversation. Don’t assume something is too ordinary to mention because it came from a grocery-store shelf. The bottle doesn’t become pharmacologically shy just because it was next to the toothpaste.
Timing turns a vague worry into useful information
Ask when the pattern began. Did bruising change after the SSRI was started, increased, or combined with something else? Are bruises appearing in places likely to be bumped, or in unusual locations without any remembered injury? Are they few and small, or large and multiplying? Have nosebleeds, gum bleeding, heavier menstrual bleeding, or prolonged bleeding from small cuts appeared too?
Take a dated photo next to an ordinary object for scale, then leave it alone. You’re documenting a pattern, not launching a nightly skin inspection. Note any injury, new exercise, illness, procedure, dental work, or medication change near the same time.
I’d also want to know whether the SSRI is helping. A medicine that has eased severe anxiety but may be contributing to mild bruising creates a different decision from one that isn’t helping and comes with several burdens. Benefits and risks need the same chair at the table.
Not every unexplained bruise belongs to psychiatry
Ordinary knocks are easy to forget. Skin can become more fragile with age or sun exposure. Other medicines, liver disease, low platelet counts, nutritional problems, infections, blood disorders, and several medical conditions can change bruising or bleeding. Some explanations are minor. Others deserve testing.
Contact a clinician when bruises are unusually large, frequent, painful, rapidly increasing, appearing without a plausible cause, or accompanied by other bleeding. Also mention fever, marked fatigue, unexplained weight loss, recurrent infections, swelling, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a family history of unusual bleeding. Those details help decide whether an examination or blood work is appropriate.
Don’t use one article to diagnose a platelet disorder. Don’t let “probably the SSRI” end a medical evaluation either. Your body doesn’t organize symptoms by the specialty that wrote the prescription.
Some bleeding signs should not wait for the next appointment
Seek prompt medical help for vomiting blood, coughing up blood, blood in urine, black or tarry stool, heavy vaginal bleeding, bleeding that won’t stop with pressure, or a rapidly expanding painful bruise. Fainting, severe weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, or a racing heartbeat with bleeding also need urgent assessment.
Call emergency services for a sudden severe headache, new confusion, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, collapse, or a significant head injury, especially if you take an anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicine. Those symptoms can signal internal bleeding or another emergency. Waiting for the bruise to file a more detailed report isn’t the right experiment.

Upcoming surgery, pregnancy, recent childbirth, a history of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding, liver disease, and a known bleeding disorder all change the context. Make sure the relevant clinicians know about the SSRI, but don’t stop it before a procedure unless the prescriber and procedural team have made a plan.
Abrupt stopping can create a second problem
If a bruise frightens you, skipping a dose may feel like taking control. SSRIs can cause withdrawal symptoms when stopped abruptly, and the condition being treated can return. Dizziness, nausea, anxiety, sleep disruption, electric-shock sensations, and irritability can then muddy an already confusing picture.
Call the prescriber or pharmacist and say exactly what you’re seeing: “I’ve developed four unexplained bruises since my dose changed, and I take ibuprofen most days. What should I do next?” That sentence is more useful than “I think my blood is broken,” though I understand how the second one gets written at 1:00 a.m.
A clinician may review the medication list, examine the bruises, order tests, adjust a medicine, or decide that monitoring is enough. The correct move depends on why you take each medication, how serious the bleeding looks, and what alternatives are safe. There isn’t one responsible internet answer for every medicine cabinet.
Make a one-page bleeding inventory
Today, write down the SSRI name, dose, start date, and last dose change. Add every prescription, over-the-counter pain reliever, and supplement you’ve used in the past two weeks. Under that, record the number, location, and approximate size of new bruises and any other bleeding.
You don’t need a color-coded forensic wall. One accurate page gives your clinician something they can use. If nothing else changes and the bruises fade normally, that’s information. If new bleeding appears, you’ll have a timeline instead of a pile of worried guesses.
Your observation matters. So does proportion. A bruise can be ordinary, medication-related, or a clue to something else. The goal isn’t to dismiss it or panic at it. The goal is to notice well enough that the next decision has evidence.
The bottom line: SSRIs can make bruising or bleeding more likely, especially when other medicines also affect platelets, clotting, or the stomach. Document the pattern, share the full medication list, and don’t stop treatment abruptly. Get prompt care for heavy, internal, persistent, or neurologically concerning bleeding. One bruise isn’t a verdict. A pattern is an invitation to look properly.
